Description

A truly one-of-a-kind experience riding into totality.

Cycle through one of the most remote landscapes as day briefly turns to night. The Westfjords Eclipse Ride 2026 is a rare opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse from Iceland’s wild Westfjords.

Over quiet roads and dramatic fjords, you’ll follow sections of the legendary Westfjords Way, pedaling through fishing villages, over mountain passes, and along coastlines where cliffs plunge straight into the sea. Each day unfolds at a human pace, with long climbs, flowing descents, and wide-open views under the endless summer sky.

On eclipse day, we position ourselves deep within the path of totality, choosing a carefully scouted viewing location that we will ride or hike to with open horizons and minimal interruption. As the moon’s shadow sweeps across the fjords, the light shifts, the temperature drops, and the landscape is transformed—an unforgettable moment shared in one of the world’s most powerful settings.

Between rides, enjoy comfortable accommodation, warm Icelandic hospitality, excellent local food, and the quiet luxury of expert guides handling every detail. Hot springs, wildlife sightings, and long evening light round out the experience.

One eclipse. One extraordinary ride.

Day 2

Into the Deep
August 7, 2026
Enjoy the breakfast buffet before we start making our way further into the Westfjords.  This day is mostly paved as we climb and descend Steingrímsfjarðarheiði before officially being in the “deep”. Keep your ears and eyes open for whales as we wind in and out of each fjord. Take one last turn before the road turns to gravel and we finish at Heydalur. Our reward is their amazing dinner and natural hot springs.
Distance: 116km
Elevation: 1,020m
Stay: Heydalur Country Hotel

Day 3

The Road to Ísafjörður
August 8, 2026
Start the day with breakfast at Heydalur. The day starts out on champage gravel before making the only turn for the day. It’s pavement from here on out and the roadies will love this stage. Grab and friend and form the paceline as we wind in and out of the fjords to Ísafjörður. We’ll finish at our headquarters, the Fjord Hub, before indulging in the world-famous all-you-can-eat fish buffet, Tjöruhúsið.
Distance: 136km
Elevation: 720m
Stay: Hótel Ísafjörður Torg

Day 4

Beside Fishing Villages
August 9, 2026
The Hótel Torg breakfast buffet will fuel you for this short, but filled day. We’ll pack the bikes into the car and drive through Vestfjarðargöng, one of the first tunnels built in the Westfjords (read: not pleasant to bike though). We’ll start our day on the other side as we switch from gravel fjord bottoms and pavement connectors. We’ll finish at Simbahöllin Café for delicious coffee and Belgium waffles. Stay in Þingeyri with a visit to the local swimming pool.
Distance: 53km
Elevation: 470m
Stay: Við Fjörðinn Guesthouse

Day 5

Svalvogar
August 10, 2026
We will make a big breakfast for this highlight day of the Westfjords Way. Some have called this the most beautiful road in the world. It is known as Svalvogar and is a double track gravel road. Luckily there is a cafe at the end of the section. The double track gravel section is very remote with rolling coastal hills and amazing views right on the sea. It is a real highlight of the tour. We’ll also stop by Dynjandi before finishing at Hótel Flókalundur for dinner and hot springs.
Distance: 103km
Elevation: 1,500m
Stay: Hótel Flókalundur

Day 6

Wind through the Fjords
August 11, 2026
Breakfast is served at Hótel Flókalundur. We’ll wind through the southern Westfjords with views of Snæfellsnes and Breiðafjörður bay to our right. Take in the remoteness of the region on our last big riding day.  The day is mostly paved with one mountain pass to climb before finishing on gravel. Stay at Djúpidalur farm in private accommodation. There is a hot spring at Djúpidalur for guests.
Distance: 90km
Elevation: 950m
Stay: Djúpidalur Farm

Day 7

Into Totality
August 12, 2026
We will make a big breakfast for everyone on the morning of the eclipse. We are going to keep this day flexible to ensure we are in the best position for the once in a lifetime opportunity. We will hunt the eclipse together and embrace the moment of totality. We will either hike or bike to a remote spot to be in the best position.
Distance: TBD
Elevation: TBD
Stay: Djúpidalur Farm
